Ebook About The author of The Riven Kingdoms teams up with her husband to write an enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance full of humor, adventure, and a good helping of epic action. With single-minded determination, Henrik has worked toward gaining his knighthood so he may rise above the lowly station in which he was born. But just when the coveted position is within his grasp, he’s tasked with a mission that proves to be far more difficult than expected—secretly keeping a watchful eye on Lady Clover, a nobleman’s daughter with a sharp tongue and a knack for starting fights. Clover, too, has one goal in life, and it has nothing to do with joining dull and dry Henrik on his supply run to the northern guard post. Why the blacksmith’s son is so determined to keep her close, she has no idea. They bicker and fight, and if Clover were to find a troll pit, she would certainly dump Henrik into it.By the time they reach their destination, they are more than ready to be rid of each other. Unfortunately, something is amiss in the northern mountains. The usually quiet aynauths are on the move, with a bloodthirsty agenda of killing the peaceful Woodmoor elves.Putting their differences aside to work together, Henrik and Clover trek across the mountains to investigate. As they slowly unravel the mystery, uncovering clues that hint at a conspiracy against the crown, it quickly becomes apparent that what started as mutual distaste has morphed into something entirely different. Something dangerous, something they didn’t expect. But neither Henrik nor Clover has room in their lives for love—especially when a sinister plot is already in the works that might not only tear them apart, but the entire kingdom as well…Book Knight from the Ashes (Crown and Crest Book 1) Review :
Don't get me wrong - this is a good story but I was expecting something more like the Indiana Jones-flavored adventures in "Moss Flower Orchid" or even "Obsidian Queen" (from her Shannon Lynn Cook pseudonym). This had a flavor & pacing more like her "Forest of Firelight" series - which is also a very well done series but different from the others in that it's a bit more sober & it also had a slower start). This book IS an enjoyable story, & I'm definitely looking forward to the 2nd book, but its character & plot development felt more carefully... calculated or controlled. Henrik & Clover are sympathetic but took some time to fully warm up to.I want to get lost in the story while I'm reading it, not be distanced from it by text-evoked images of constructing the outline & worldbuilding on a whiteboard. I missed that sense that the authors were letting loose, having fun with it & enjoying themselves. But maybe it's just me.Hopefully things will smooth out & pick up in the 2nd book.*Romance level: passionate kisses, heroine considers using the hero for a short term fling, but nothing graphic Having read almost all of Shari Tapscott’s other work, I have to say that this was probably my favorite book since the Silver and Orchids series. Shari and Jake are a great writing pair and I thoroughly enjoyed this joint venture. The story was engaging, the characters humorous but not immature, and the side characters entertaining with surprising depth. I also appreciated not being left on a cliff with the ending. The story definitely has more to it in the next books, but I wasn’t left in agony waiting for the next! ;)Definitely worth the read! I look forward to the next installment!
